London Visitor Survey (LVS)

The London Visitor Survey (LVS), which was launched in September 2006, continues to provide a robust picture of what visitors think of their visit to the capital. The LVS allows us to track both domestic and overseas visitor satisfaction with the capital over time and understand the strengths and weaknesses of London as a visitor destination.

The first Annual Report, for 2007, was produced in April 2008. Highlights show that:

  • Half of overseas visitors stay in London for six or more nights. In comparison, UK visitors stayed for shorter periods, with around three quarters spending three nights or less.
  • For 43% of overseas visitors it was their first visit, whereas nearly half of UK staying visitors indicated they had visited London more than 10 times in the past five years.
  • Most visitors are in London for holiday/leisure purposes ( 56% of overseas visitors and 46% of UK staying visitors).
  • A large percentage of overseas visitors stay with friends and relatives (40%) and only 60% stay in paid accommodation. Around 60% of UK visitors stay with friends and relatives.
  • Overall visitor satisfaction was high, with 71% of those interviewed rating London as excellent or very good as a place to visit.
  • In terms of repeat visits, 61% stated that they would definitely visit the capital again, while 70% said they would definitely recommend London to others.

Results for London as a whole are available in quarterly reports, with sub regional analysis published on an annual basis. Bespoke information from the survey is available on request, subject to the statistical robustness of data. For further information please contact Peter Haxton, peterhaxton@lda.gov.uk.
