Dialogue process and wider engagement

What is the Crystal Palace dialogue?

In 2003, discussions began with the Crystal Palace Dialogue Group - comprising over 200 organisations and individuals with an interest in the Park and the National Sports Centre (NSC). Meetings were held to explore the differences and common ground between the groups and looked at ideas for the Park and NSC.

The overall aim of this process since the London Development Agency (LDA) took control has been to provide a mechanism for ongoing consultation with LDA and the main stakeholder groups (including the general public) to inform the LDA's decision making on:

  • the future of the sports centre;
  • the future of the rest of the park;
  • governance and management issues.

The main dialogue group meets on average around every quarter. There are also three smaller working groups, one focusing on park related issues and the other on sports issues and the other on documenting the park's heritage and history from past to present. These groups tend to meet more regularly with more specific areas of focus and targeted actions.

Who takes part?

The Dialogue Group includes representatives of:

  • Local community and interest groups
  • tenants' and residents' associations
  • amenity societies
  • London Boroughs of Bromley, Lewisham, Southwark, Lambeth and Croydon (Members and Officers)
  • English Heritage
  • sports clubs
  • Sport England
  • Greater London Authority (GLA)
  • London Development Agency
  • local traders
  • wildlife organisations
  • Green Party
  • campaigning groups
  • individual residents
  • Government Office for London.

Most of these are also represented on the Working Groups.

The Dialogue Group tries to ensure that the stakeholder list represents a balanced cross section of views. If you know of a group that could be invited to broaden the consultation process, please contact the facilitator, Nigel Westaway. Email: nwestaway@compuserve.com

Wider community engagement

For the 2005 Planning Framework wider community engagement also took place to ensure a wide range of views were represented and fed into the Framework document. This involved targeting a number of different groups not necessarily represented through the main dialogue process.

This wider community engagement is an ongoing and essential part of the next phase of the project, developing the master planning designs. We want to make sure that the vital consultation which feeds into the long term development work for Crystal Palace, is reflective of the communities the park serves.

Independent consultants 'Local Dialogue' have been appointed as part of the masterplanning team to lead the community outreach and engagement programme.
