The LDA bought Greengate House in 2001 with the specific aim of converting it into urgently needed accommodation for the capital's essential workers. The property has a long history of serving the local community.
Situated in the heart of Plaistow, it was originally built in 1919 for the YMCA and was last used by arts students when it belonged to the University of East London.
On 21 October 2003, the LDA announced the appointment of the internationally renowned architects Herzog & de Meuron to transform Greengate House in Plaistow, east London, into quality homes for the capital's key workers.
The Mayor's Architecture and Urbanism Unit worked closely with the LDA and the preferred developers, London and Quadrant Housing Trust, to select the architect.
